It looks like Mexican boxer Alejandro Espinoza Tinoco is thinking twice about coming to fight in South Africa.
Word coming from Central America is that Tinoco has changed his mind about flying to South Africa for a fight against Yanga ‘Showtime’ Sigqibo at the Boardwalk Hotel in Gqeberha on Sunday, 25 April.
Sigqibo, who is a World Boxing Organisation (WBO) Intercontinental junior-bantamweight champion, has been training very hard since January. That was when it was announced that he was going to challenge reigning World Boxing Council (WBC) bantamweight champion Nordine Oubaali from France.
But that fight fell through with Oubaali, who is of Moroccan descent, changing opponents more than twice.
Ink Sport has learnt that Tinoco has cited another commitment on Friday, 23 April, as the reason why he’s now reluctant to come to South Africa even though he had shown a keen interest in facing Sigqibo.
Tinoco has a professional record of 15 victories (seven stoppages) and a loss compared to Sigqibo’s 14 wins with four knockouts, a loss and a draw.
Sigqibo has not fought since he stopped Filipino boxer Cris Paulino in March 2020 while Tinoco had three fights last year.
