Craig Martin is set to make his 100th appearance for Cape Town City when the Citizens clash against SuperSport United in a DStv Premiership fixture at the Cape Town Stadium on Saturday (17h00).
The 27-year-old midfielder, who extended his contract with the Citizens for a further three years earlier this year, has been a key member of the Cape club. He is joining Roland Putsche, Thami Mkhize, Thabo Nodada and Taariq Fielies, who have played 100 matches.
Having been part of the Citizens, Martin still remembers the first time he won a man-of-the-match award.
“My first man-of-the-match was against Ajax Cape Town. It was my first time being interviewed on TV. I was a bit shy and English didn’t come out nice,” Martin said.
Martin’s performances at the Citizens didn’t go unnoticed as former Bafana Bafana coach Molefi Ntseki called him to the national team before they played Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Ghana and Sudan in March.
Martin from Kensington in Cape Town has said that being a professional footballer has resulted in a lot of changes at his home.
“It feels good being the one from the area. Youngsters look up to me,” Martin said.
Meanwhile, Citizens chairman John Comitis has commended Martin for the role he has played at the team.
“A day we wanna celebrate regarding Craig Martin. He will join our elite club of 100,” said Comitis.
