Acting Boxing South Africa (BSA) chief executive officer Cindy Nkomo has distanced her organisation from the ‘weigh-in’ conducted by Jackie Brice of Jackie Brice Boxing Promotions in Cape Town on Thursday.
The tournament, which was going to be held this past Friday, was called off because it was not sanctioned by BSA.
“A weigh-in is a BSA event. It’s authorised by BSA, not a promoter. I’m not sure what they were doing. There was no weigh-in. The tournament was not sanctioned. And if the tournament is not sanctioned then, obviously, we can’t have a weigh-in,” Nkomo said.
“We sign off all our weigh-ins. Our event as BSA starts at the weigh-in. We were never involved, so we did not have a weigh-in.”
And Brice has refused to comment on the matter opting to say that he has taken BSA to court.
“I can’t talk of this event because it’s gonna go to the High Court and I went to see my advocate. Unfortunately, the matter is sub judice,” Brice said.
It was reported that Brice had promised to pay all the boxers, who were due to fight in the tournament, 80 percent of the agreed purses. However, Cape Town boxing trainer Welsh Macibela who had three boxers scheduled to fight at the tournament revealed that nothing was signed when Brice made the promise.
“No money has been paid yet. The promise was done verbally,” Macibela said.
