The South African Football Association (SAFA) is mourning following the death of assistant referee Shaun Olive.
The match official, who won the 2019/20 Assistant Referee of the Season award, passed away on Saturday morning after he sustained serious injuries during a motor accident in Johannesburg on Thursday.
“We are gutted as the association. Here was a young man, taken away at the prime of his career. Shaun was among the rising young officials and his passing is a huge blow to the country, the continent and the world,” SAFA president Danny Jordaan said.
Chairperson of the SAFA referees committee Natasha Tsichlas said; “Shaun’s bubbly presence and amiable character will be sorely missed among us. He showed so much promise and was on the cusp of a flourishing career.”
