Cape Town City chairman John Comitis has explained why he decided to re-appoint Eric Tinkler as their coach.
Tinkler returned to the Citizens last week after the Mother City club fired Dutchman Jan Olde Riekerink almost two weeks ago.
Riekerink got the boot after the Citizens failed to break into the top four bracket. The Citizens were seventh on the DStv Premiership table when Riekerink was fired.
“I think it’s clear what we are doing here. We are not happy with our reach. We are not happy with being mediocre. That’s being the kind of a season for us,” Comitis said.
“At the beginning of the season I probably assembled one of the best group of players in our five-year history. But things do not always work out on the pitch as they do on paper. And sometimes the missing link is the person that can switch on the correct switches to get everybody to tick.
“So we didn’t hesitate when we realised that this season was the season to make the changes we needed. So Eric Tinkler is back. Eric is back for two very clear reasons because we are an ambitious club and we know what to expect from Eric.”
Tinkler was the first coach Comitis employed after he purchased the status of Mpumalanga Black Aces five years ago.
“His work ethic and certainly his ability to work with South African players of different cultures as we do have a diverse squad and club. That’s been just the change. We have already gone into the market to look for additional reinforcements in certain positions. We’ve probably achieved two of the three targets we’re chasing, one still to come and that will kind of unfold in the couple of weeks,” the Citizens boss said.
Meanwhile, Comitis  has reiterated that they are not interested in selling their players locally. The former Cape Town Spurs and Jomo Cosmos player is looking at exporting players.
