AmaZulu coach Benni McCarthy reckons that their match against draw kings Swallows FC at King’s Park in Durban on Wednesday (17h00) is going to be a test of their character.
McCarthy said so because Usuthu have a duty to snap a two-match losing streak after they got beaten by Baroka FC and Orlando Pirates in recent games.
“For us, we’ve everything to play for. First time in the history of the club that we will be able to play in the CAF Champions League,” McCarthy said.
“We lost two games in a row. Now it’s a test of our character. We are playing against draw kings, a team that lost only once. It doesn’t become any easier for us. We’ve got our own fate in our own hands. It’s imperative that we do what’s right, what we have been doing this season.”
Usuthu have had a great season under McCarthy and were at one stage unbeaten in 16 matches. And McCarthy says unity has been the team’s driving force.
AmaZulu were challenging for the DStv Premiership title until Baroka beat them and champions Mamelodi Sundowns stretched their lead on the log.
“Unity, team spirit, togetherness, we built a family environment. We were able to enjoy each other’s company. We were able to know more about each other. And I think once you have that connection then on the field it will pay dividends,” the former Cape Town City coach concluded.
