Helman Mkhalele is satisfied with Bafana Bafana’s second half performance during their 3-2 win over Uganda in an international friendly match played at the Orlando Stadium in Soweto on Thursday evening.
Bafana Bafana came from 1-0 down to beat the Cranes through Evidence Makgopa’s brace and a goal from Bongokuhle Hlongwane. The Cranes has taken the lead through Ibrahim Orit’s header in the first half.
“During the first half we stuck in central midfield. That’s where the Ugandans were able to build from the back and penetrated us easily. In the first half we didn’t dominate. But they were not hurting us that much because they were always dominating possession in their own half,” Mkhalele said.
“So whenever they went forward they couldn’t create those chances except the one that they scored. Of course, our boys were nervous.”
Mkhalele’s boys played better in the second half scoring three times on their way to winning the match.
“Second half, basically we told the boys that we needed to change our formation and personnel. We then saw those beautiful combinations. I’m so proud even though we could have scored more goals,” the former Jomo Cosmos and Orlando Pirates midfielder said.
Mkhalele was in charge of Bafana Bafana in the absence of coach Hugo Broos, who’s home in Belgium for the second jab of the COVID-19 vaccine. Broos’ other assistant Cedomir Janevski tested positive to COVID-19 on Tuesday.
