Benni McCarthy is pleased with what he saw on Sunday even though his team AmaZulu failed to the lift the KZN Premier’s Cup.
Usuthu were beaten 5-3 on penalties by provincial rivals Maritzburg United in the final of the KZN Premier’s Cup at the Chatsworth Stadium in Durban on Sunday evening. The match was decided on penalties after it ended 2-2 in 90 minutes.
Having played two matches against Lamontville Golden Arrows and Maritzburg United, the Usuthu coach believes that that was a bit too much for his players.
“Very good game of football. I think it was entertaining. Congratulations to coach Ernst (Middendorp) and Maritzburg,” McCarthy said.
“It’s gonna be a fantastic season. Our preseason has been of a sad moment. We didn’t have the best preseason, but I think this was a challenge with me. The kind of opposition we had Golden Arrows, Maritzburg in one day was a hurdle too much for us.”
Despite losing to the Team of Choice, McCarthy said he was pleased with what he saw during the two-day tournament.
“Overall, I’m pleased with the performances. I’m very pleased with what I see and we still got seven, eight players that still has to come in and make us better. Now we can turn our attention to Sunday,” McCarthy said.
Usuthu face McCarthy’s former team Cape Town City in the quarter-finals of the MTN8 at the Moses Mabhida Stadium, Durban, at 18h00 on Sunday.
