Bloemfontein-based boxer Sihle Jelwana from Komani claims he was not aware that he needed to be cleared by Boxing South Africa (BSA) before flying to fight in Russia earlier this month.
Jelwana drew with Rufat Huysenov from Azerbaijan at a tournament, which was held at the RCC Boxing Academy in Ekaterinburg, Russia, on Saturday, 7 August.
This fight took place after 27-year-old Jelwana had travelled to Russia without being cleared by BSA.
Jelwana’s fight against Huysenov came less than two weeks after he was stopped by Namibian Immanuel Josef in a vacant World Boxing Organisation (WBO) Africa flyweight title contest at the Nangoza Jebe Hall in New Brighton, Gqeberha.
“I didn’t have a clearance when I went to fight in Russia. I didn’t even know that l had to get a clearance from BSA before going to fight there,” Jelwana said.
Sabelo Ngebiyana, who is Jelwana’s Komani homeboy, also fought in the same tournament. Ngebiyana lost to Armenian boxer Narek Abgaryan.
Meanwhile, BSA has written a letter to German Titov of RCC Boxing Promotions seeking more information regarding the two boxers’ fights.
