Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has shown faith in SuperSport United goalkeeper Ronwen Williams as he appointed him as national team captain on Monday.
Broos was rubber stamping a decision he took in June when he declared Williams as Bafana Bafana skipper.
Williams, who is also a Matsatsantsa a Pitori captain, is going to be deputised by newly-signed Al Ahly attacking midfielder Percy Tau.
“I have decided to have Ronwen as a captain and Percy as a second,” the 69-year-old Belgian said.
“First of all, I think Ronwen is a man who has experience. Also the man who can communicate, which is very important. Percy is a little bit more quiet, but he is more experienced with several European teams. I think he has the respect of the group.”
Bafana Bafana are in camp preparing for two 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Zimbabwe at the National Sports Stadium in Harare at 15h00 on Friday and Ghana at the FNB Stadium in Nasrec at 18h00 on Monday.
Mamelodi Sundowns’ Mothobi Mvala reported in camp with a knock and Broos has called Kaizer Chiefs defender Njabulo Ngcobo as cover.
“I’m happy to start. We can go work on the two games against Zimbabwe and Ghana. These are tough games,” Broos said.
“We had a few problems as you know (Mosa) Lebusa, (Innocent) Maela, (Sphephelo) Sithole, but also Mvala, who has a little injury. We called in the 24th player, Ngcobo who is here with us. It can be we go to Zimbabwe with 24 players.”
