Failure to secure fights in almost three years never dampened South African female champion Nozwelethu Mathontsi’s spirit.
Instead, Mathontsi was always hopeful that she would get a fight one day and that has happened as she is set to trade leather with Halima Vunjabei from Tanzania.
Mathontsi meets her Dar-Es-Salaam-born opponent in an eight-round bout at the Meropa Casino in Polokwane on Friday, 24 September.
“I’m very happy that l will finally get into the ring and fight. I’m also nervous as well because l have not fought in a very long time,” Mathontsi remarked.
The 27-year-old South African female junior-flyweight champion, who has not fought since her stoppage loss to Simangele Hadebe in December 2018, has admitted that the Tanzanian is a closed book to her.
“I really don’t know my opponent, but l don’t think that’s going to be a problem. I had been training throughout even though I was not getting fights,” Mathontsi said.
