Angola and Mozambique drew 2-2 in the opening match of the COSAFA Women’s Championship at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Gqeberha on Tuesday afternoon.

Both teams started well and it was the Mozambicans, who broke the deadlock in the 22nd minute following a mix-up between Angola’s Zeferina Caupe and Margarete Mendes Salvador. Albertina Pondja capitalised on that and beat Angolan goalkeeper Sandrina Antonio to give the Mozambicans a 1-0 lead.

The Mozambicans thought they had made it 2-0 in the 37th minute only for Ermerina da Conceiao Guinda’s goal to be disallowed for a foul on Margarete.

The pace of the match improved in the last 15 minutes of the first half. And the Angolans equalised through Zeferina, who beat an offside trap in the 40th minute.

Second half substitute Cidalia Cuta restored Mozambique’s lead when he headed in from a corner kick in the 78th minute. But their lead only lasted five minutes as the Angolans equalised through Yara Lima.
