Banyana Banyana coach Desiree Ellis is disappointed after her team were beaten 3-2 by Malawi in a COSAFA Women’s Championship semi-final clash at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Gqeberha on Thursday.
Banyana Banyana, who were favourites to win the tournament, were flat against a game Malawi.
“I think our biggest part of our game was not conceding. We were poor. We got back into the game, then we conceded,” she said.
“Four minutes to go, once again we made an error. We made a combination of errors at the back.”
The Malawians showed more purpose from the first whistle and it’s no wonder that they emerged victorious from the match.
“We didn’t have a great first half. We were better second half, but the way we conceded was unlike us. With all the experience we have, we couldn’t clear our line at times,” Ellis remarked.
“We didn’t manage the game. Malawi were clinical in front of goals. Unfortunately, we conceded more than we scored. Very disappointed with the result, but we have to go back and work.”
