Mexican boxer Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez was too powerful for Caleb Plant as he stopped him in the 11th round during their showdown at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, United States, on Sunday morning (South African time).
Following the win, Alvarez added the International Boxing Federation (IBF) title to his World Boxing Association (WBA), World Boxing Organisation (WBO) and World Boxing Council (WBC) super-middleweight belts, which were also at stake.
It was a usual slow start for Alvarez even though he connected well in the last minute of the first round.
There were moments where Plant, 29, used his jab effectively, especially in the first and third rounds.
However, the 31-year-old Mexican started to hit with powerful blows from the fourth round. It then became one way traffic as Alvarez’s blows consistently found their intended target.
It was then no wonder that Alvarez decked the American with a left hook in the 11th round. Plant beat the count, but was decked for the second time in the same round something which forced referee Russell Mora to wave the fight off.
Alvarez has stretched his record to 57 wins with 39 stoppages, a loss and two draws while Plant lost for the first time in 22 fights.
