It has finally been confirmed that Phila Mpontshane’s title defence against Sibusiso Zingange, which was scheduled for the Booysens Boxing Gym in Johannesburg on Sunday, is off.

This comes after the South African junior-lightweight champion and his trainer Dudu Bungu tested positive for COVID-19. A second opinion also confirmed that indeed Mpontshane contracted COVID-19.

The sad news was confirmed by a source on Saturday morning. Initially, Mpontshane’s manager Andy Mtshotshisa was also said to have tested positive, but that turned out to be false. This was discovered after Mtshotshisa took an initiative and made an investigation, which proved that he’s negative.

Boxing South Africa (BSA) Gauteng manager Lehlohonolo Ramagole said he was in a meeting when he was called for comment.

Meanwhile, this was going to be the first time Mpontshane fights since his loss to Khanyile Bulana in September 2019.
