The camp of current South African junior-lightweight champion Phila Mpontshane has been told that he’s not going to get even a blue cent after his fight against Sibusiso Zingange was called off last weekend.
The fight, which was scheduled for Booysens Boxing Gym in Johannesburg, was cancelled after Mpontshane and his trainer Dudu Bungu tested positive for COVID-19.
An aggrieved Andy Mtshotshisa, who is Mpontshane’s manager, believes that his boxer should have been paid at least 10 percent of his agreed purse.
But Bongani Dlamini of Bonglez Boxing Promotions believes otherwise. Dlamini is the one who negotiated with Mpontshane on behalf of Soweto Boxing Promotions boss Obed Molekwa.
“We paid all the boxers excluding those who tested positive. Yes, we didn’t pay Mpontshane,” Dlamini confirmed.
Meanwhile, Joyce Kungwane of TLB Boxing Promotions paid all the boxers 10 percent of their purses after her tournament was postponed because of positive COVID-19 cases late in November.
