Departed former world champion Zolani ‘Wayimunamuna’ Marali, who passed away after he was shot at his Hillbrow flat in Johannesburg last Friday night, is going to be laid to rest this coming Saturday.
The erstwhile South African junior-featherweight, International Boxing Organisation (IBO) junior-featherweight and junior-lightweight titlist is set to be buried in Zigodlo village, Debe Nek. According to a boxing delegation which visited Marali’s Mdantsane home on Monday, a memorial service has been scheduled for NU6 Hall at 16h30 on Wednesday.
Apart from winning the SA and IBO titles, the 1999 All Africa Games bronze medallist from Mdantsane also won the World Boxing Federation (WBF) junior-welterweight title.
Meanwhile, East London-based promotional outfit Rumble Africa Promotions (RAP) has chipped in and will foot the bill of Marali’s funeral.
Golden Gloves boss Rodney Berman, who once promoted Marali, as well as the late boxer’s former trainer Colin Nathan have also pledged financial support towards the funeral expenses.
