East London boxer Thulani ‘Evolution’ Mbenge has made it clear that he is not interested in fighting for the South African welterweight title, again.
SA champion Mbenge has insisted that his main interest is to face former world champion Chris van Heerden to decide who is the better boxer between the two of them.
This is so even though Mbenge is yet to relinquish the SA welterweight title he has held since his win over Mziwoxolo Ndwayana in December 2020.
“I have passed the stage to fight for the SA title. We are still pursuing a fight against Chris van Heerden. His camp is interested in the fight even though no promoter has come forward with an intention to promote it,” Mbenge, who is rated seventh by the World Boxing Council (WBC), said.
Mbenge is fresh from a second round stoppage win over Tanzanian boxer Iddi Pialari at The Galleria in Sandton, Johannesburg, last month.
Meanwhile, Mbenge and Van Heerden have both held the SA and International Boxing Organisation (IBO) welterweight titles.
