Sikho ‘Sequence’ Nqothole put up a dominant performance and defeated Denmark Quibido from the Philippines by a unanimous decision at the Galleria, Sandton, Johannesburg on Thursday evening.
The lad from Mthatha had, as a result of the win over the Pinoy boxer, won the vacant World Boxing Organisation (WBO) Global junior-bantamweight title.
Nqothole, who is trained by former South African bantamweight champion Phumzile Matyhila, dominated from the first to the last bell.
Pumeza Zinakile and Jaap van Niewenhuizen had Nqothole winning by 120-106 and Patrick Mukondiwa’s score card read 117-111.
The 28-year-old Nqothole improved his professional record to 16 wins (10 stoppages) and two defeats while Quibido lost for the first time in his career. The Filipino dropped to 12 wins with seven of those wins coming from knockouts, a loss and one draw.
Meanwhile, Jabulani Makhense beat Angolan Henriques Lando on points to win the vacant International Boxing Federation (IBF) Continental Africa welterweight title.
