More information has come to light following the killing of former South African title contender Mfusi Maxhayi, who passed away after he was shot in Mdantsane on Monday morning. He was 35.
Ink Sport has reliable learnt that Maxhayi, who was due to return to Johannesburg on Monday, was allegedly shot dead by someone who is known in East London boxing circles following an altercation.
Our source, speaking anonymously, alleged that Maxhayi got shot while trying to protect his female friends, who were travelling with him in his car.
Maxhayi was based in Johannesburg where he was a fitness trainer and had only come back to the Eastern Cape for the festive season.
Originally from Ilitha township in the Buffalo City Metro, Maxhayi is a former Eastern Cape, IBO International and World Boxing Federation (WBF) bantamweight champion.
In September 2015 Maxhayi lost on points to Bongani Mahlangu in his bid to win the South African junior-featherweight title. The fight was held at the Orient Theatre in East London.
