Another dark cloud has descended on South African football following the passing away of former Bafana Bafana midfielder and Orlando Pirates captain John ‘Dungi’ Moeti.
The 55-year-old Moeti, who played 29 times for Bafana Bafana, passed away at his Johannesburg home on Monday morning.
“It is with profound sadness and deep sense of loss that we inform you of the passing of John ‘Dungi’ Moeti. John suddenly took ill eight months ago and was receiving specialist medical care. John succumbed to his illness in the early hours of this morning (February 6) at home, surrounded by his family and brethren in prayer,” a statement from the Moeti family said on Monday
Moeti was part of the Buccaneers’ squad, which won the 1995 CAF Champions League trophy. He was also a member of the Bafana squad, which won the 1996 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament on home soil.
Moeti joined Pirates from Dynamos in 1995 and left them after four years to join SuperSport United in 1999. He spent two years at Matsatsantsa a Pitori.
