Mamelodi Sundowns maintained their unbeaten run in the CAF Champions League Group B after they held Al Ahly to a 2-2 draw at the Al Ahly Stadium in Cairo, Egypt, on Saturday evening.
Namibian international Peter Shalulile broke the deadlock when he beat Red Devils goalkeeper Mohamed El Shenawy in the 34th minute after he connected with Cassius Mailula’s pass.
The Egyptians had an opportunity to equalise when they were awarded a penalty following a foul on Percy Tau by Mothobi Mvala. Ronwen Williams saved Mohamed Hany’s penalty in the 51st minute.
The Red Devils finally found the equaliser when Mohamed Abdelmonem headed past Williams from Ali Maaloul’s corner in the 59th minute. Al Ahly went in front in the 74th minute after Hussein El Shahat’s solo effort resulted in him beating Williams at the near post.
Second half substitute Thapelo Morena made it 2-2 when he slotted the ball in the far corner after Mailula’s shot had come off the post with El Shenawy well beaten in the 80th minute.
The Tshwane giants, who top Group B with seven points, have now won twice and drawn once while third-placed Red Devils have one draw and a loss.
