South African ultra-marathon superwoman Gerda Steyn on Sunday smashed a long down run course record set by Frith van der Merwe 34 years ago.
The 33-year-old Steyn clocked 5:44:54, an improvement to the 5:54:43 record set by Van der Merwe on the Pietermaritzburg to Durban race in 1989.
Bothaville-born Steyn broke her own record when she won the Two Oceans Marathon in Cape Town in April this year. She finished in 3:29:06, just six seconds better than last year.
