Already rated fourth in the junior-bantamweight division, Lwando Mgabi aims to use his next fight, which is against Goitsemodimo Pooe, to make sure that he maintains his unbeaten record and climbs further up in the South African ratings.
Having won his four fights and two of them ending in knockouts, Mgabi clashes with Pooe in a junior-bantamweight six rounds bout at the Goodwood Correctional Centre, Cape Town, this coming Friday.
“I don’t know much about my opponent. I only saw him once at a tournament when Zolisa Batyi defended his title against Abdul-Azziz Kunert. Pooe was fighting against Asakhe Nocele and he lost on points. He didn’t look like a difficult boxer. He will be lucky if he finishes the six rounds on Friday,” Mgabi said.
Nearly poached by a rival camp recently, Mgabi is trained by Andile Madubedube, Welsh Macibela and Siyabonga Mafika at the 9th South African Infantry (9SAI) Boxing Club in Khayelitsha, Cape Town.
The 22-year-old Mgabi, who is originally from Duncan Village in East London, is the reigning Western Cape junior-bantamweight champion, a title he won after he stopped Nwabisile Cholani in the first round in April this year.
Meanwhile, Thembani Mbangatha and Bulelani Ngondeka are going to fight for the vacant Western Cape junior-lightweight title in the same tournament, which is going to be promoted by Jackie Brice’s Jackie Brice Boxing Promotions.
