Two days after fighting for the first time since 2019, Athi Mahanjana became a victim of a mugging in Mdantsane on Sunday.
And it was feared that Mahanjana, who defeated Sibonelo Ndzimande at the Orient Theatre in East London last Friday, might have lost his eyesight after the attack.
However, it has since been confirmed that only his right eyelid was almost damaged and it has been stitched now.
“He was hit with an empty bottle while he was being mugged on Sunday night. His cellphone was snatched in the process. I wish all these boys can learn to refrain from going around at night. Had it not been that, Athi wouldn’t be injured today. Thanks to the Cecilia Makiwane eye ward for their prompt response to this situation. Athi’s career has now been saved,” All Winners Boxing Club manager Mlandeli Tengimfene said.
Mahanjana remained in hospital after Tengimfene together with former International Boxing Federation (IBF) junior-bantamweight and World Boxing Organisation (WBO) bantamweight champion Zolani ‘Last Born’ Tete visited him on Wednesday.
