In a battle involving two of the big five animals in the form of Ivory Coast and Senegal, the Elephants beat the Teranga Lions 5-4 on penalties at the Charles Konan-Banny Stadium in Yamoussoukro.
This last-16 encounter was decided in spot kicks after the two West African sides had drawn 1-1 in two hours of football.
The Teranga Lions took an early lead when Mouhamadou Habibou Diallo chested the ball before rifling past Ivory Coast goalkeeper Yahia Fofana off Sadio Mane’s cross in the fourth minute.
The Elephants equalised through Franck Kessiè’s penalty four minutes before full-time. The penalty came after Nicolas Pepe was fouled by Senegal goalkeeper Édouard Mendy.
