The always wide open ‘transfer window’ in South African boxing has seen Nhlanhla ‘Mount Kilimanjaro’ Tyirha turning his back on East London to join forces with former national bantamweight champion Phumzile ‘Sweet Chocolate’ Matyhila as his new trainer in Gauteng.
The erstwhile SA junior-flyweight champion’s move to Matyhila on Tuesday came after he was rumoured to be joining his former trainer Khangelani Jack in Benoni, Ekurhuleni.
“Yes, I can confirm that Tyirha has arrived to join our gym,” Matyhila confirmed on Tuesday afternoon.
Tyirha was until December last year trained by former World Boxing Association (WBA) and International Boxing Organisation (IBO) featherweight titlist Simphiwe Vetyeka at the Paradise Boxing Club in Nxarhuni.
“I have moved to Johannesburg now. It was my decision to leave the Eastern Cape because of the things that were distracting me. I wanted to move away from my comfort zone,” Tyirha said.
