Things are moving fast for Mdantsane-born boxer Amzolele ‘Globe’ Dyeyi as he has already secured a date for his professional debut in Johannesburg after moving from East London to Gauteng this week.
Dyeyi, who bagged a silver medal at the Mandela African Boxing Cup tournament in Durban last Sunday, is set to have his first fight in the paid ranks at the Kibler Park Recreation Centre on Friday, 24 May.
“He’s a good boxer. He told me that he wanted to turn pro and join me. I said he must just finish the All Africa Games,” Dyeyi’s manager Colleen McAusland from McAusland Boxing Management said.
The 22-year-old Dyeyi, who was trained by Zolile ‘Gqo’ Mahambi in Mdantsane, is now under 2023 Trainer of the Year award winner Khangelani Jack, who is the chief trainer at the McAusland Boxing Gym.
“We’ve been chatting for a while already. He didn’t know that Jack was with me. When he heard Jack joined us, he was happy. Jack had trained him before. He’s having his first pro fight on the 24th of May,” McAusland confirmed.
Dyeyi missed out on winning a gold medal at the Mandela African Boxing Cup tournament, which was held at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre (ICC) in Durban after he lost to Mozambican Sigauque Armando Rugeberto in the featherweight final.
“Pity, another cut at the Mandela Games. But he ended his amateur career well with a silver, gold would have been better,” McAusland remarked. – Monwabisi Jimlongo
