Trainer Sean Smith reckons that his boxer Thabiso ‘The Rock’ Mchunu’s fight against Russian Muslim Gamzatovich Gazhimagomedov offers him a chance to revive his boxing career.

Coming from two successive defeats, KwaXimba-born Mchunu squares up against the unbeaten Russian Olympic star in Luzhniki, Moscow, Russia this coming Friday.

“We are ready for the fight. Everything has gone pretty well while preparing for this fight. We have had a good amount of sparring,” Smith said.

“Thabiso was in decent condition even before we went to camp. This fight means a lot to him after coming off from two split decision losses. It’s an opportunity for him to revive and bring life to his career.”

Mchunu, the current South African cruiserweight champion, lost to former World Boxing Council (WBC) champion Ilunga Junior Makabu from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Argentine boxer Yamil Alberto Peralta in his last two fights.

“We are coming up against a good boxer who has won his five fights.  However, I think they made a mistake by bringing Thabiso here. They think he’s gonna be a walk over,” Smith remarked.

Gazhimagomedov bagged a silver medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and has won all his five fights, having stopped three of his opponents. The 28-year-old Gazhimagomedov won a gold medal at the 2019 World Championships and European Games. – Monwabisi Jimlongo
