A date has been set for reigning World Boxing Organisation (WBO) junior-bantamweight champion Phumelela ‘The Truth’ Cafu’s first title defence.

After shocking the boxing world last year by beating four-division world champion Kosei Tanaka at his Japanese backyard in Tokyo, Japan, Cafu will now defend his WBO crown here at home on Saturday, 24 May.

The date of the Duncan Village-born Cafu’s first title defence was confirmed by Boxing 5 chief executive officer Larry Wainstein on Friday morning.

“My phone hasn’t stopped ringing with people asking me where and on what date Phumelela will be defending his title. I can now say that we are locking in the 24th of May,” Wainstein said.

The date might have been confirmed, but no decision has been made regarding the fight venue and Cafu’s opponent.

“We are still in discussions with various people and provinces regarding the location of the fight,” Wainstein remarked.

Cafu’s trainer and manager Colin ‘Nomakanjani’ Nathan said: “I am currently in talks with several people. Unfortunately, besides Sikho Nqothole, who is a stablemate of Phumelela, is going in another direction, no one is good enough in South Africa to fight Phumelela.”
