After redeeming himself by stopping Sechaba Zuma in the fifth round, Lwando Mgabi has defiantly insisted that he’s going to continue campaigning in the junior-bantamweight division.

Mgabi went to the Zuma fight after he lost the South African junior-bantamweight title on the scales following his failure to make the required weight at the official weigh-in on Friday, a day before the bout, which was held at the Estcourt Town Hall in KwaZulu-Natal.

And during the fight, Duncan Village-born Mgabi dropped Zuma twice – in the second and fourth rounds. Fight referee Eric Khoza had no choice as he waved the bout over in two minutes and 56 seconds in the fifth round.

“I’m going to remain in the junior-bantamweight division. My main aim is to reclaim my title. That’s my title, no one will take it. I’m going to fight against the number two contender and then win my title back,” Mgabi said.

On failing to make the required weight on Friday, Mgabi said: “I had no weight problems when I left Cape Town. My weight was 52 kilograms and I then weighed 53,85kg during the weigh-in. We tried our best to shed the kilograms, but we couldn’t. By the way, a number of boxers overweighed on Friday and I suspect that the scale was faulty.”

After stopping Zuma, Mgabi improved his record to eight victories with three knockouts while Zuma dropped to four wins, three losses and a draw. – Monwabisi Jimlongo
