Landile ‘Man Down’ Ngxeke fought very hard to make sure that he earned a unanimous decision victory over Mexican boxer Eric Gamboa at the Orient Theatre in East London on Sunday evening.
Following the win, Ngxeke successfully defended his World Boxing Organsation (WBO) Intercontinental crown and also won the vacant IBF International bantamweight title.
Two scorecards were identical as Patrick Esterhuizen and Patrick Mukondiwa had Ngxeke winning by 99-90 and Jaap van Niewenhuizen scored the fight 98-90.
Ngxeke from Sada in the Eastern Cape fought well even though there were moments when Gamboa’s left landed almost all the time when it was thrown.
In another fight, Asanda Gingqi got the nod ahead of Tanzanian opponent Tony Rashid during their vacant African Boxing Union (ABU) junior-lightweight title contest.
All the judges unanimously agreed that Gingqi from Mdantsane had done enough to walk away with the title.
Meanwhile, Thobela Nyanda retained her South African female mini-flyweight title following a unanimous points victory over Yonelisa Poni.
Judge Lulama Mtya scored the fight 99-93, Simphiwe Gceba 98-92 and Allen Matakane 97-93 as Nyanda defeated Poni for the third time.
