Given a choice, the National Professional Boxing Promoters Association (NPBPA) whose executive committee’s term of office expired two months ago would block any new entrants in the business of promotion of the fistic sport.

This is part of the amendments the promoters want Boxing South Africa (BSA) to effect as they have made their submissions to the regulator.

“New promoters must write an examination before they are issued a licence. No new promoter should be issued with a national or international licence on first registration,” reads one of their submissions.

“A development promoter who wishes to be issued with a national licence must provide a competence of having hosted a tournament in the same year he or she was issued with a development licence. Promoters with two years experience and who have hosted more than one tournament are not required to write assessment tests.”

On sanctioning fees, the promoters said: “The payment of sanctioning fees should be moved from percentage based amount to flat rate amount determined and agreed upon between Boxing South Africa and promoters. Purses should be paid by no later than 14 days.”

The promoters’ submissions included having one ambulance at a development tournament and two ambulances at a televised boxing show, which features national and international titles.

And they further proposed that the sanctioning committee should sit seven days after a promoter had submitted a tournament application.

“No application from the promoter should be accessed by Boxing South Africa administrative officials. We propose that provincial managers form part of the sanctioning committee as they know boxers from their provinces. Matchmakers must also be invited to the sanctioning meetings as resource people,” the promoters said.

Meanwhile, the promoters have also proposed a purse structure for title challengers, provincial and national champions.

They proposed that a provincial title defence should be R20 000, national title challengers must get a minimum of R35 000 and a purse for a national title defence should be a minimum of R75 000.
