The Pharaohs of Egypt have advanced to the second round of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations tournament following a 1-0 win over Bafana Bafana in a Group B match at the Adrar Stadium in Agadir on Friday evening.
The Pharaohs won the match through Mohamed Salah’s converted penalty on the stroke of half-time. The Pharaohs were awarded a penalty after Khuliso Mudau had fouled Salah inside the box.
There were tense moments when match referee Pacifique Ndabihawenimana referred to the video assistant referee (VAR) and only disappointed South Africans as he awarded Egypt a dropped ball instead of a penalty to Bafana after Yasser Ibrahim had looked like he had handled the ball inside the box.
Bafana, who are second on the Group B standings with three points from two matches, need a positive result when they play their last group stages match against their neighbours Zimbabwe on Monday next week.
Meanwhile, Angola and Zimbabwe played to a 1-1 draw in an earlier match with Gelson Dala scoring for the Black Panthers and Knowledge Musona equalising for the Warriors.
