It looks like reigning World Boxing Council (WBC) minimumweight champion Melvin ‘El Gringo’ Jerusalem from the Philippines is considering moving up a division or two.
Jerusalem, who is going to celebrate his 32nd birthday this coming Sunday, hinted on his Facebook page about moving up from the minimumweight. It’s, however, not clear whether Jerusalem’s hint came as a result of Puerto Rican Oscar Collazo’s decision to defend his World Boxing Association (WBA) and World Boxing Organisation (WBO) minimumweight titles against American boxer Jesus Haro.
Writing on Facebook, Jerusalem, a former WBO minimumweight titlist, asked: “It’s time to move up a division, what do you think, boxing fans?”
Jerusalem won the WBC title after he dethroned Japanese boxer Yudai Shigeoka in March 2024. Already, Jerusalem has defended his WBC crown three times – winning against Luis Castillo, Shigeoka and Siyakholwa Kuse. – Monwabisi Jimlongo
