Trainer Alan Toweel is planning to lead his boxer Tyla Promnick into South African boxing history books when she challenges national female minimumweight champion Thobela Nyanda next month.

Unbeaten in five fights having stopped three of her opponents, Promnick has signed to face off against Nyanda in a bid to have the South African championship belt wrapped around her waist.

“The champion has accepted our challenge. This is a very big opportunity for Tyla. Should she win the fight, she will become one of the youngest female boxers to win an SA title,” Toweel said.

The 21-year-old Promnick is fresh from a six rounds win over Yonelisa Poni at the Silver Lakes Farm in Pretoria almost two months ago. Nyanda, meanwhile, will be fighting for the first time since her loss to Malawian boxer Harriet Mtende in December last year.

Fight referee Pumeza Zinakile stopped the proceedings in the third round as Nyanda, who picked up a shoulder injury, was struggling to respond to Mtende’s blows. – Monwabisi Jimlongo
