A two-year contract Asemahle Wellem signed with Happy Tewo’s Tewo Boxing Promotions last year has put paid to his chances of fighting in a Golden Gloves tournament in June.

Wellem, who relocated to Gauteng last month, was billed to fight in a ‘Winner Takes All’ tournament at the Emperor’s Palace in Kempton Park on Saturday, 11 June. The fight was offered before Golden Gloves discovered that Wellem’s contract with Tewo Boxing Promotions will expire next year.

The 21-year-old Wellem from Chintsa moved to Gauteng last month and is trained by Vusi Mtolo in Edenvale, Ekurhuleni.

“He’s not gonna be on the bill. He was, but it’s not happening anymore. I thought he moved over to Vusi Mtolo and had no promoter. We found out that he has a promoter in East London. Apparently, he has a two-year contract with the promoter. We can’t interfere,” Golden Gloves fight co-ordinator Jeff Ellis said.

Meanwhile, Tewo, who promoted Wellem’s two fights, said that he had no problem with the prospect fighting in another promoter’s tournament.

“I heard about him being offered a fight by Golden Gloves. We had no problem with him being given a fight by another promoter even though no one contacted us,” Tewo said.
