England only need 33 runs to win the third and final Test match and secure the series against the Proteas at The Oval.
At stumps on day four on Sunday, England were on 97 with Zak Crawley having knocked 57 runs while Alex Lees was on 32.
Meanwhile, the Proteas were bowled out for 169 with captain Dean Elgar top scoring with 36 runs off 59 deliveries.
South African bowler Marco Jansen took his maiden five-wicket haul and only giving away 35 runs in England’s first innings.
