Champion Mpumelelo Tshabalala is back at training preparing for the second defence of his South African junior-flyweight title against Athenkosi Thongwana.
Tshabalala is scheduled to square up against Duncan Village’s Thongwana in East London on Sunday, 19 March. Initially, this fight was set for the 29th of January, but had to be postponed after Tshabalala got involved in a car accident on his way back from his Dundee home in KwaZulu-Natal to Katlehong in Ekurhuleni on New Year’s day.
“I have started training after the doctor gave me the go ahead to do so following the car accident. I have not gone as hard as I would like to because sometimes I feel some pain, sometimes I don’t,” Tshabalala said.
Tshabalala won the national title when he stopped Xolisa Magusha from Sada in the fifth round at the East London International Convention Centre (ICC) in March last year. He successfully defended the title with a split decision victory over Sikho Moshani from Duncan Village at the same East London venue last July.
