South African bantamweight champion Ronald ‘King’ Malindi is still fighting for his life at the Helen Joseph Hospital after he was shot twice in Westbury, Johannesburg, on Tuesday.
Boxing South Africa (BSA) manager in Gauteng Hloks Ramagole, who is Malindi’s spokesperson, has revealed that the two bullets, which hit the unbeaten champion are yet to be removed.
“He’s still in hospital and is fighting. They cleaned his wounds and stitched him to avoid him getting infections. They couldn’t remove the bullets because of the swelling. They will remove the bullets either on Monday or Tuesday,” Ramagole said on Sunday.
With Malindi having defended the national title four times, he’s only one win away from gaining outright ownership of the SA bantamweight belt.
Malindi was due for a mandatory defence against Lusizo Manzana from East London. The duo were due have fought in East London two months ago, but the fight didn’t go ahead after Malindi’s trainer Sean Smith refused to travel to the Eastern Cape with only the boxer and without his assistant.
