Moroccan side Wydad Athletic Club defeated Mamelodi Sundowns 2-1 in the first leg of the African Football League final at Stade Mohamed V in Casablanca, Morocco, on Sunday evening.

Things went wrong for the Tshwane giants when their defender-cum-midfielder Rivaldo Coetzee scored an own goal to give Wydad a 1-0 lead four minutes before the half-time break.

The Brazilians pushed hard in search of an equaliser in the second half and they scored from the penalty spot through Moroccan Abdelmounaim Boutouil in the 75th minute.

Three minutes later, the home side restored their lead when Anas Serrhat beat Sundowns goalkeeper Ronwen Williams.

The Brazilians and the North Africans are going to meet in the second at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria next Sunday.
