While other women boxers are struggling to secure fights, it’s not the same with Owethu Rula as she gets to fight for the fourth time this year with her challenging South African female junior-flyweight champion Nozwelethu Mathontsi.
Rula and Mathontsi meet in a rematch of their August shootout as they are scheduled to clash in a Xaba Promotions tournament in East London on Saturday, 16 December.
Fresh from a stunning first round stoppage win over Mdantsane’s Namhla Mankayi at the Wells Estate Multipurpose Hall in Gqeberha last month, Rula lost on points when she challenged Mathontsi at the Orient Theatre in East London in August.
“We have agreed and signed a contract to fight against Mathontsi, again,” Rula’s trainer Caiphus Ntante from Caiph Camp in Gqeberha confirmed.
The 25-year-old Rula, an IT specialist from Gqeberha, is the current Eastern Cape flyweight champion who has won twice and lost once this year. Overall, Rula has four wins and four losses.
Meanwhile, Phumelela ‘The Truth’ Cafu’s opponent for the vacant SA junior-bantamweight title fight has been changed yet again.
Gcina Makhoba, who was last week announced as Cafu’s opponent, has since been kicked to touch and Enathi Stelle will now face the Duncan Village boxer.
Initially, Stelle was Cafu’s opponent but negotiations fell through because of disagreements over a purse.
Then Mpilo Cele from Umlazi in Durban was given a contract to sign for a fight against Cafu only to be substituted by Dundee-born Makhoba, who has now been dumped in favour of a fight against Stelle.
