Asanda ‘Dynamite’ Gingqi is confident that his hand will be raised yet again after his fight against Qumbu-born Thembani Mbangatha at the International Convention Centre (ICC) in East London on Saturday next week.
This is going to be Gingqi’s first defence of the South African junior-lightweight title he won after he outpointed Sifiso Hlongwane in Orlando East, Soweto, four months ago.
“If the guy thinks he’s going to beat me, then he’s joking. Yes, I don’t know much about him except that he has a good record. He’s coming here to lose, nothing else,” Gingqi remarked.
Mdantsane-born Gingqi has registered 11 wins with seven knockouts and a loss while Mbangatha has 13 victories (six stoppages) and a defeat.
Initially, Gingqi and Mbangatha were due to have fought for the then SA featherweight title in 2021, but that fight never took place. Instead, Gingqi fought and defeated Abdul-Aziz Kunert in September 2021.
“I won the featherweight title in 2021 and I know how to be a South African champion. This is the second time that I’m a South African champion,” Gingqi said.
