Funding is one of the critical issues, which the newly-appointed board of Boxing South Africa (BSA) is going to look at in a bid to bring normalcy to the country’s fistic sport.
This is what BSA board chairperson Sifiso Shongwe said a few hours after Minister of Sport Zizi Kodwa confirmed his appointment on Tuesday afternoon.
Shongwe leads a seven-member BSA board, which is made up of Dr Koketso Tsebe, Luxolo September, Sakhiwe Sodo, Nande Mheshe, Romy Titus and Dr Luvuyo Bayeni.
“We are glad that the matter has now come to a conclusion. I think the Minister conducted himself above reproach. He was prudent in starting the whole process afresh before he ultimately made a decision,” Shongwe said.
Shongwe added: “We need to find a solution to the matter of funding, which will increase the number of shows. We can increase the level of activity. We can get our boxers highly active. We have over 70 promoters, but less than 20 of them are active. So, we need to find a high level of funding to have more shows.”
This board has a huge task of bringing normalcy to South African boxing following a mess created by their previous board, whose term ended in December last year. – Monwabisi Jimlongo
