Having won most of his fights on the road during his illustrious boxing career, legendary Brian Mitchell is confident that South African boxer Siyakholwa Kuse from Mdantsane in the Eastern Cape will finally fulfil his dream of becoming a world champion.
Kuse challenges Filipino boxer and World Boxing Council (WBC) strawweight champion Melvin Jerusalem at the Smart Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City, Manila, in the Philippines on Wednesday next week.
The former South African minimumweight titlist arrived in the Philippines together with Mitchell, who is his manager, trainer Manny Fernandes and second Richard Fernandes on Wednesday. Kuse will be chasing history as he wants to become the first boxer from the Eastern Cape to rule in the WBC.
“Richard and his father Manny Fernandes and myself Brian Mitchell are gonna take Siya Kuse from East London to become the first East Londoner to win a strawweight WBC world title next week on Wednesday,” Mitchell, a former World Boxing Association and International Boxing Federation (IBF) junior-lightweight champion said from the Philippines.
Kuse’s fight against Jerusalem forms part of the Thrilla in Manila boxing card, which celebrates 50 years since Muhammad Ali and Joe Fraizier, who are both deceased, fought in the Philippines. – Monwabisi Jimlongo
