Mafia Boxing Promotion boss, Anathol Wannah, is pleased with how South African boxer, Asemahle ‘The Predator’ Wellem’s career is shaping up in Tanzania.
Wannah has been promoting Wellem in Tanzania since the former South African super-middleweight champion got into trouble with Boxing South Africa (BSA) for continuing to fight outside the country without being cleared by the fistic regulator.
The Chintsa-born Wellem is suspended until the 23rd of September following a third round stoppage loss to Kazakh boxer, Ali Akhmedov, during an interim International Boxing Organisation (IBO) light-heavyweight clash held in Almaty, Kazakhstan, last month. Currently, Wellem is back in South Africa and is expected back in Tanzania soon.
“Asemahle is a very nice kid and we are on good terms. He’s back in South Africa with our blessings as we gave him time off as we normally do to boxers after their fights. He has a two-year contract, which expires in July next year,” Wannah remarked.
“We expect him back soon and he will probably fight again in December after serving his suspension following the loss in Kazakhstan. We have two upcoming tournaments in September and December.”
Meanwhile, BSA stripped Wellem of his SA super-middleweight crown after he consistently fought outside South Africa without being cleared by the boxing regulator.
“I know about his suspension in South Africa. I just wish that I could have done something to help sort out the problem. Anyway, we chose to get him a licence here. His contract with us and the licence are going to expire at the same time in July next year. Thereafter, we will apply for a new licence and give him a new contract as well,” Wannah said. – Monwabisi Jimlongo
