A fight for better purses received a boost when the Boxing South Africa (BSA) board approved R2000,00 per round.
Starting from Tuesday, 1 September, boxers will earn a minimum of R2000,00 per round compared to the R1000,00 which was agreed upon many years ago. Boxer managers had been fighting for a minimum purse rate of R2500,00.
“A minimum purse rate of R2000,00 per round has been established for all professional bouts. Consequently, a baseline of R8000,00 is mandated for any standard four-round contest,” BSA chief executive officer, Tsholofelo Lejaka, said in a statement on Wednesday evening.
Lejaka added that going forward no tournaments will be sanctioned by the BSA sanctioing committee if the purse rate per round is less than R2000,00.
“All licensed promoters are strictly required to reflect these minimum amounts in bout contracts submitted to Boxing South Africa for sanctioning. BSA will not sanction any tournament or contest held on or after 01 September 2026,” Lejaka said.
