Boxing South Africa (BSA) has finally set the date to launch the long-awaited Steve Tshwete Boxing League, which has been delayed for more than a year since it was announced by the Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, in KuGompo City.

Fittingly, the Steve Tshwete Banquet Hall in Middelburg, Mpumalanga, has been confirmed as the venue where the launch is going to be held on Saturday. 21 November and the final participants will be revealed four days later.

“Your commitment ensures that this inaugural annual competition is built on a foundation of inclusivity across provinces, gender representation and transformation,” BSA chief executive officer (CEO), Tsholofelo Lejaka, said.

A total of 32 male boxers are going to participate in three divisions – mini-flyweight, bantamweight and super-middleweight. On the other hand, 16 female fighters are set to take part in the mini-flyweight and flyweight divisions.

“Following extensive deliberation and talent pool analysis, we are pleased to officially announce the five weight divisions selected for the first rollout of the league,” Lejaka remarked.

“All boxers with less than five fights operating within these five designated weight divisions are strongly urged to remain active, fit and combat ready. Ensure that you maintain your peak physical condition so that you are prepared for immediate call-up and selection should your name feature on the final participant list.”

Lejaka concluded: “Further comprehensive details regarding schedules, tournament rules, and rollout procedures will be shared with the sector in the coming week.  Thank you for your continued dedication to the growth and development of South African boxing.”
