A win over Kaizer Chiefs is something that Cape Town City coach Jan Olde Riekerink has been yearning for.
It is then no wonder that the Dutchman is smiling from ear to ear after the Citizens defeated Amakhosi 2-1 in a DStv Premiership fixture at the FNB Stadium in Nasrec on Wednesday evening.
Citizens’ goals were scored by Tashreeq Morris and Bradley Ralani while Kearyn Baccus netted for Chiefs.
“We knew Chiefs is very dangerous with crosses. We had to survive in the last 20 minutes, that’s part of the game. This was a crucial game, we needed the points,” Riekerink said.
“Cape Town City always struggle with Chiefs. We had to win this game. What we tried to do was to offload the sides. The crucial area was the midfield. I think they did very good.”
Chiefs coach Gavin Hunt, meanwhile, reckons that they deserved something from the match.
“We were slow to close the spaces down. They were certainly better. In the second half we did very, very well, we deserved a draw. We missed two big chances. I know what’s needed and what’s not needed. That’s a very tough situation,” Hunt said.
The Citizens will be home to Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila on Saturday while Amakhosi visit log-leaders Mamelodi Sundowns on Sunday.
