Hunger and a desire to put bread on the table for his family compelled Sabelo Ngebiyana to go fight in Russia without being cleared by Boxing South Africa (BSA) almost a fortnight ago.
Ngebiyana lost to Narek Abgaryan from Armenia in an eight-round bout at the RCC Boxing Academy in Ekaterinburg, Russia, on Saturday, 7 August.
“Yes, I did go fight in Russia. I had no choice because my family needed the money after my fight against Gideon Buthelezi was postponed,” Ngebiyana said.
“I decided not to inform BSA about my fight in Russia because of my past experience with the organisation. My responsibility to provide for my family forced me to go fight in Russia.”
Before fighting in Russia, the 30-year-old Ngebiyana had only fought once between January 2020 and July 2021.
